Bad Bank’ Will Be Set Up for Dexia: Leterme

A “bad bank” for troubled assets will be set up for Dexia SA (DEXB) and will have government guarantees, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme said.
The government will ensure that no client of Dexia Bank Belgium “will lose a single euro cent,” Leterme told a press conference today in Brussels after a meeting to discuss options for the bank. "We will guarantee the continuity of Dexia Bank Belgium."
Belgium and France said earlier today that they will take “all necessary measures” to protect clients and will guarantee Dexia’s loans. Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders said tonight that details of the Dexia plan will be released after talks with partners.
The bank’s shares plunged 22 percent, the steepest decline since September 2008. The stock slid 29 cents to 1.01 euros in Brussels, cutting Dexia’s market value to 1.96 billion euros ($2.6 billion).
Leterme said the bad bank will be set up with the "necessary guarantees." The government will "do everything to consolidate the activities of Dexia Bank Belgium," he said.
Reynders said Belgium is seeking to "reinforce" and "consolidate" the "activities of the bank in Belgium as our colleagues will do in France."
