Wall Street set for higher open ahead of Fed decision, trade talks

U.S. stock index futures rose sharply on Wednesday as Boeing and Apple surged on the back of their earnings results.
At 7:33 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 253 points, indicating a gain of 261.04 points at the open. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures also pointed to strong gains at the open.
Boeing shares jumped 5.9 percent after its quarterly earnings easily beat expectations. Apple also rose more than 5 percent after reporting a quarterly profit that barely beat estimates. Shares of AMD and Anthem also rose 10.4 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively, after the companies released their earnings.

Investors also looked ahead to a key monetary-policy decision from the Federal Reserve. The Fed is largely expected to have kept interest rates unchanged at their latest meeting. However, investors will look for clues regarding the Fed's plans to roll off its massive balance sheet.
Market focus is largely attuned to global trade developments, with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He arriving in Washington to meet U.S. officials on Wednesday. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Tuesday that he expected the world's two largest economies to make significant progress toward a comprehensive trade agreement this week.
However, many market participants remain skeptical about whether the economic giants can bridge differences over a number of issues, including intellectual property rights and technology transfers.
On the data front, an ADP employment report is due at 8:15 a.m. ET and a pending home sales index is due to be reported at 10 a.m. ET.

Pending home sales drop in December despite much lower interest rates

House hunters signed 2.2 percent fewer contracts to buy existing homes in December, according to the National Association of Realtors.
The Realtors' pending home sales index was also down a dramatic 9.8 percent compared with December 2017.
Realtors blame stock market volatility and weak affordability.

House hunters signed 2.2 percent fewer contracts to buy existing homes in December, according to the National Association of Realtors.
These so-called pending sales are a future indicator of closings in one to two months. The Realtors' pending home sales index was also down a dramatic 9.8 percent compared with December 2017.
This marks 12 straight months of annual declines. It is also the lowest December sales reading since 2013.

Some observers expected sales to get a boost in December from a drop in interest rates. Mortgage rates moved markedly lower to end 2018, with the average rate on the popular 30-year fixed loan falling from just over 5 percent in mid-November all the way to 4.61 percent by Dec. 31, according to Mortgage News Daily.
Buyers had been struggling with high prices and higher rates for most of last year, and home sales dropped as a result.
"The stock market correction hurt consumer confidence, record high home prices cut into affordability and mortgage rates were higher in October and November for consumers signing contracts in December," said NAR's chief economist, Lawrence Yun, in a release, suggesting that perhaps buyers were not aware of the lower rates.
The partial government shutdown, which concluded last week after a record-long 35 days, would not have figured much into these numbers, as it didn't begin until toward the end of December.
"Seventy-five percent of Realtors reported that they haven't yet felt the impact of the government closure. However, if another government shutdown takes place, it will lead to fewer homes sold," Yun added. President Donald Trump and lawmakers agreed to re-open the government until Feb. 15, with the intention of reaching a longer-term funding deal before that deadline.
Regionally, pending home sales in the Northeast rose 2.0 percent month to month, and were 2.5 percent below a year ago. In the Midwest, sales fell 0.6 percent monthly and 7.2 percent annually. Sales in the South fell 5 percent monthly and 13.5 percent annually, and in the West sales increased 1.7 percent monthly but were 10.8 percent lower compared with December 2017.
Closed sales of existing homes, which represent contracts signed in October and November, were also sharply lower in December, as the median home price hit a new high.
The housing market has been plagued by a very tight supply of entry-level homes as well as very low levels of new construction. While the supply of homes for sale is increasing slightly, the growth is mostly at the move-up and luxury levels.
