Apple announces iPhone 12 Pro with 5G and its largest screen ever

Apple is announcing the iPhone 12 and other new models Tuesday. CNBC is covering the event live right here.

Apple is announcing its new iPhone 12 phones on Tuesday, including details on when the iPhone 12 will be released. The event is being streamed online and starts at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. It’s been called “the most significant iPhone event in years.”

Here’s what Apple has announced so far:

The HomePod Mini smart speaker.
5G is coming to the iPhone.
The iPhone 12 with 5G.
The iPhone 12 will use new MagSafe magnets for wireless charging and accessories.
iPhone 12 Mini.

Apple is also releasing new high-end iPhone models under the Pro moniker. It comes in four colors, including gold and blue.

One model of iPhone 12 Pro will have a bigger display that Apple says is the largest iPhone screen it has released so far.

Three years ago, Apple promised to release a new wireless charging gadget called AirPower that could charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods simultaneously.

It never launched, and Apple was forced to announce a year and a half later that it killed the project.

But on Tuesday, Apple announced a new charging paradigm for the iPhone called MagSafe that lets chargers, cases and other accessories snap onto the back of the device. Apple also made its own new MagSafe charger that can charge your watch and iPhone at the same time.

It’s probably the closest Apple will get to its real promise of the original AirPower. --Steve Kovach

The ACTIV-3 monoclonal antibody trial - a phase three randomized controlled trial - has been paused due to potential safety concerns, Eli Lilly confirmed to CNBC.
“Safety is of the upmost importance to Lilly. We are aware that, out of an abundance of caution, the ACTIV-3 independent data safety monitoring board (DSMB) has recommended a pause in enrollment,” a spokeswoman told CNBC.
Eli Lilly’s late-stage trial of its leading monoclonal antibody treatment for the coronavirus has been paused by U.S. health regulators over potential safety concerns, the company confirmed to CNBC.

“Safety is of the upmost importance to Lilly. We are aware that, out of an abundance of caution, the ACTIV-3 independent data safety monitoring board (DSMB) has recommended a pause in enrollment,” a spokeswoman told CNBC.


The trial is designed to test the safety and efficacy of a potential new treatment for Covid-19, namely different varieties of monoclonal antibody treatments. It’s one of several ongoing trials, as part of the National Institute of Health’s “Activ” program, designed to accelerate the development of vaccine treatments in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry. It is also backed by Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration’s effort to manufacturer and distribute vaccines to fight Covid-19.
