Lord only knows how the markets will react tomorrow to Apple’s earnings miss today. The reality that Apple is merely wildly profitable, and not stupendously profitable, might be too much for a fragile market to bear.

Treasury Secretary Geithner in Congress (9:30): testifies before House Committee on Financial Services on the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s annual report to Congress
June new home sales (10:00): seen rising by 1.6% to 375,000 after rising 7.6% to 369,000 in May
EIA weekly petroleum status report (10:30): crude oil stocks seen falling 800,000 barrels, after falling 810,000 a week ago.
In Europe:
Ifo business climate index from Germany (4:00 a.m. ET): seen falling to 96.4 from 97.3
UK second-quarter GDP estimate (4:30 a.m.): seen down 0.2%.
Lastly, the European Commission takes up a proposal to make lending-rate manipulation a criminal offense.
