Consumo privado, inversión en construcción impulsan crecimiento del PIB alemán en el 1er trim

BERLÍN, 24 mayo (Reuters) - Un sólido consumo privado y una mayor inversión en la construcción impulsaron un aumento de un 0,7 por ciento del Producto Interno Bruto alemán (PIB) en el primer trimestre, más que compensando el débil comercio exterior en la mayor economía de Europa, mostraron datos el martes.

Confirmando una lectura preliminar, la Oficina Federal de Estadísticas dijo que el gasto de los consumidores y la inversión en construcción contribuyeron cada uno con 0,2 puntos porcentuales al PIB en el período enero-marzo.

El gasto estatal aportó 0,1 puntos porcentuales debido a que las autoridades gastaron más para recibir e integrar a los inmigrantes.

El comercio exterior neto representó un lastre de 0,1 puntos porcentuales, luego de que las exportaciones crecieron a un ritmo más débil que las importaciones.

Ventas casas nuevas EEUU trepan a máximo en 8 años, precios suben a récord histórico

WASHINGTON, 24 mayo (Reuters) - Las ventas de casas unifamiliares nuevas en Estados Unidos treparon a su mayor nivel en más de ocho años en abril y los precios alcanzaron un máximo histórico, lo que ofrece más evidencia de un repunte en el crecimiento económico que podría llevar a la Reserva Federal a subir las tasas de interés pronto.

El Departamento de Comercio dijo el martes que las ventas de viviendas nuevas aumentaron un 16,6 por ciento a una tasa anual desestacionalizada de 619.000 unidades, el nivel más alto desde enero del 2008. El incremento porcentual es el mayor desde enero de 1992.

El indicador de marzo fue revisado al alza para mostrar la venta de 511.000 unidades. Economistas encuestados por Reuters esperaban un alza en las ventas de viviendas a estrenar, que representan alrededor del 10,2 por ciento del mercado inmobiliario, a apenas 523.000 unidades el mes pasado.

El precio promedio de una casa nueva aumentó un 9,7 por ciento desde hace un año, a un récord de 321.000 dólares, debido a una oferta menor de propiedades. La escasez de casas disponibles para la venta pesa en el sector, en momentos en que un crecimiento más acelerado de los precios de las viviendas que de los salarios deja afuera del circuito a varios compradores.

Las ventas de casas nuevas son un indicador volátil en términos mensuales, por lo que el incremento de abril podría estar exagerando la fortaleza real del mercado inmobiliario.

Con todo, el alza del mes pasado impulsó las ventas muy por arriba del promedio del primer trimestre de 531.667 unidades. Las ventas de viviendas a estrenar aumentaron en tres regiones, pero disminuyeron en el área occidental de la zona central.

El reporte llegó luego de datos positivos de ventas de casas usadas y de construcción de viviendas residenciales. También se sumó a los reportes optimistas de ventas minoristas y producción industrial, que sugieren que la economía está cobrando impulso luego de que la expansión se estancó en el primer trimestre.

El dólar trepó a máximos de sesión frente al euro y el yen después del informe sobre ventas de casas a estrenar, mientras que los precios de los bonos del Tesoro estadounidense ampliaron sus pérdidas.

WASHINGTON, 24 mayo (Reuters) - La deuda total de las familias estadounidenses subió a 12,250 billones de dólares en el primer trimestre del 2016, debido mayormente a un incremento de las hipotecas, de acuerdo a un sondeo revelado el martes por el Banco de la Reserva Federal de Nueva York.

La cifra constituye un aumento de 136.000 millones de dólares en deuda de los consumidores respecto al cuarto trimestre del 2015 y de 401.000 millones de dólares respecto a hace más de un año, indicó la Fed de Nueva York.

El monto calculado en hipotecas también trepó a 8,370 billones de dólares, un aumento de 198.000 millones de dólares en la comparación interanual, mostró el sondeo.

La deuda por créditos a estudiantes alcanzó 1,26 billones de dólares, un ascenso de 72.000 millones de dólares respecto al mismo periodo del año previo, mientras que los préstamos para compras de autos se incrementaron a 1,07 billones de dólares, un alza de 103.000 millones de dólares a nivel interanual.

U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, boosted by gains in financial and technology stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 202 points, or 1.2%, to 17694, while the S&P 500 climbed 1.3%.

Some investors said stocks were still absorbing recent indications that the U.S. Federal Reserve may raise interest rates. Rising rates are good for banks because they increase the gap between what banks charge on loans and what they pay for deposits, a spread known as the net interest margin.

Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker said Monday he could “easily” see the U.S. central bank raising rates two to three times this year, possibly as soon as June.

“I think the markets are coming to grips with the fact that the Fed is going to raise interest rates, the world’s not going to end, and let’s see who benefits,” said Bob Doll, senior portfolio manager at Nuveen Asset Management. “Financials are among those who should benefit.”

Financial stocks in the S&P 500 gained 1.4%, while the KBW Nasdaq Bank Index of large U.S. commercial lenders rose 1.7%. Morgan Stanley climbed 2.5%, and Citigroup rose 2.1%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 1.6%, while technology shares in the S&P 500 gained 1.8%. Western Digital rose 4.6% and Lam Research added 3%.

Sales of new homes rose at the fastest pace in more than eight years in April as prices rose, a sign of steady demand and limited supply. Purchases of new single-family homes jumped 16.6% from a month earlier to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 619,000, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That’s the fastest pace since January 2008.

Shares of Toll Brothers, a luxury home builder, rose 5.2% as it reported better-than-expected profit and revenue in its second quarter. “We continue to believe the drivers are in place to sustain the current housing market’s slow but steady growth,” said Robert I. Toll, executive chairman.

Best Buy issued a soft profit forecast for the current quarter, helping drive shares down 8.5%.

U.S. government bonds pulled back, sending the two-year yield to the highest level in more than two months, amid investor concerns about a rate rise this summer. The yield on the two-year note, which is highly sensitive to the Fed’s rate-policy outlook, was 0.922%, the highest intraday level since mid-March. It was 0.899% on Monday.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was 1.852%, according to Tradeweb, compared with 1.840% Monday.

The Stoxx Europe 600 reversed early losses to rise 2.2%.

Eurozone finance ministers were meeting Tuesday to discuss options for Greek debt relief, after the country’s parliament approved taxes and austerity measures over the weekend needed to unlock further rescue loans.

“For once, there’s good news on Greece,” said Mike Bell, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, noting investor sentiment was lifted by hopes that Greece will receive relief before major debts fall due in July.

In currencies, the euro slipped 0.5% against the dollar to $1.1158. German economic growth accelerated at the start of the year, data showed Tuesday, but a separate report from German think tank ZEW showed financial analysts grew more pessimistic about the country’s economic outlook.

The dollar rose 0.6% against the yen to ¥109.933. Japan’s finance minister said Tuesday that the country has no plans to weaken the yen to try to boost exports, following weeks of market speculation.

The British pound rose 1% against the dollar to $1.4630 after an opinion poll pointed to a lower chance of the U.K. voting to leave the European Union in a June 23 referendum.

“The pound has had a little jump for joy on fact that Brexit risk is reducing, but sterling could fall quite a bit more if Britain left [the EU],” Mr. Bell said.

Shares in Asia mostly ended lower as oil prices fell and investors continued to grapple with the prospect of higher U.S. interest rates.

Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average fell 0.9%, while the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 0.1%.

U.S. crude oil added 1.5% to $48.78 a barrel. Gold fell 1.4% to $1,234.20 an ounce.
