Empresas japonesas, poco entusiasmadas con estímulo fiscal y monetario: sondeo Reuters

TOKIO (Reuters) - Las compañías japonesas dijeron en forma abrumadora que los últimos estímulos del gobierno harán poco por impulsar a la economía y que el Banco de Japón no debería seguir aliviando la política, halló un sondeo de Reuters, un revés en los intentos del gobierno para vencer a la deflación y el estancamiento.

Este mes, el primer ministro Shinzo Abe reveló un paquete fiscal de 13,5 billones de yenes (135.000 millones de dólares) en obras públicas y otras medidas, prometiendo un frente unido con el banco central -conocido como BOJ- para resucitar a la economía.

Esto elevó las especulaciones de que habría una escalada del gasto público financiada esencialmente por el organismo monetario.

Pero menos del 5 por ciento de las compañías creen que las medidas favorecerán a la economía en el corto plazo o incrementarán su crecimiento potencial, de acuerdo con el Sondeo Corporativo de Reuters, realizado del 1 al 16 de agosto.

"Es decepcionante que el estímulo se enfoque en las obras públicas y carezca de atención para promover la industria y la tecnología que llevarán al crecimiento futuro", dijo un gerente de un fabricante de maquinaria de precisión.

Research, alcanzó a 533 firmas grandes y medianas, con respuestas anónimas de los gerentes. Respondieron alrededor de 260 compañías.

Abe asumió hace tres años y medio prometiendo una reactivación económica con agresivos planes de estímulo monetario y fiscal, además de reformas.

Pfizer Nears Agreement to Buy Medivation

Pfizer Inc. is nearing agreement to buy biotech Medivation Inc. in a deal that would add one of the crown jewels of the multibillion-dollar market for cancer drugs to Pfizer’s portfolio, according to people familiar with the matter.

The $14 billion all-cash deal could be announced as early as Monday, one of the people said. It would end months of bidding for San Francisco-based Medivation, one of the most desired independent biotechs because it sells a leading prostate-cancer drug.

Medivation’s prostate-cancer drug, Xtandi, already generates about $2 billion in yearly sales and has potential to more than double, according to analysts.

Pfizer has been seeking to expand its lineup of such oncology treatments. Xtandi would give the New York-based drug company a beachhead in prostate cancer complementing its breast-cancer treatment Ibrance, which is on track to be a blockbuster. Medivation’s drugs in development could also complement Pfizer’s efforts to develop combinations of cancer agents with so-called immunotherapies, which deploy the immune system in the fight against cancer.

A deal would also further Pfizer CEO Ian Read ’s efforts to bolster what he refers to as the innovative side of the company’s business.

Mr. Read has said the company will decide by year’s end whether to split into one company selling fast-growing brand-name drugs like Ibrance and another company selling drugs that have lost patent protection.

Wall Street expected Pfizer would split after agreeing to take over Allergan PLC in a $150 billion deal, but the two companies parted ways in April, after the Obama administration targeted the proposed combination with new rules.

After the breakup, some analysts said Pfizer needed to do more deals to add patent-protected drugs if that side of the company was to develop the critical mass of revenue it would need to function on its own.

The news of Pfizer’s potential deal for Medivation was reported earlier by the Financial Times.

Cancer is one of the pharmaceutical industry’s biggest markets with world-wide sales amounting to roughly $80 billion a year and growing more than 10% annually, according to EvaluatePharma.

Despite charging high prices often surpassing $100,000 a year, companies haven’t faced the challenges securing reimbursement that have limited sales of new drugs for other diseases.

Medivation is one of the few independent biotechs left with a cancer treatment that is already approved and selling well. CEO David Hung says he decided to found the company after watching a 28-year-old breast-cancer patient die during his oncology fellowship.

Xtandi has held its own against a rival prostate-cancer treatment from Johnson & Johnson called Zytiga. Xtandi, which Astellas Pharma Inc. also sells, could be one of the top-selling cancer drugs by 2020, according to EvaluatePharma.

But J&J is developing a new prostate-cancer drug that could pose a threat to Xtandi, according to analysts.

Medivation was put in play after French drug company Sanofi SA made an unsolicited proposal of $52.50 a share in cash, which the biotech rejected in April saying the offer substantially undervalued the company.

A bidding war resulted. If Pfizer’s offer wins, Medivation will fetch more than double the $6 billion it was valued earlier in the year.

Oil Companies Need Prices to Keep Rising Past $50 a Barrel

LONDON—A rally that pushed international crude-oil prices above $50 a barrel Thursday is a welcome sign for many energy companies but not enough to kick-start an industry in the midst of a two-year slump, executives said.

“We’re in a little bit of an upswing at the moment and everybody’s got a smile on their face because we might be at $50 a barrel,” said Tony Durrant, chief executive of Premier Oil PLC, a British oil company with operations from the North Sea to the Falkland Islands.

But, Mr. Durrant said in an interview Thursday, “every day of every week I’m talking to our joint venture partners around the world and I hear people still canceling projects.”

Oil prices remain far below the $100-a-barrel area that energy companies had become accustomed to during a nearly decadelong run that ended in 2014, when a global oversupply of crude sent prices skittering down to as low as $27 a barrel in January. On Thursday, Brent crude, the international benchmark, breached $50 a barrel for the first time in six weeks and, along with the U.S. benchmark, entered bull-market territory.

The rebound isn’t enough yet to solve the problems of even the biggest and most resilient oil companies.


It won’t be until next year that BP PLC plans to generate enough cash to be cash-flow neutral—meaning it can cover its capital spending and dividend payouts—with oil prices at $50 to $55 a barrel, even after a series of huge cost cuts. Exxon Mobil Corp. has said it would be in a similar position next year at $40 to $80 a barrel and Chevron Corp. has said it would balance its cash generation and spending at $52 a barrel next year—after as much as $5 billion in asset sales.

As oil crosses back into $50 territory, some American shale producers with strong balance sheets are starting to drill again. For instance, Apache Corp. , based in Houston, set its budget for 2016 assuming an average oil price of $35 a barrel, but higher prices in recent months have allowed it to add a rig in Texas and keep two drilling in the North Sea that it was planning to release.

But Dave Hager, chief executive of Devon Energy Corp. , said many U.S. producers need oil to hit $60.

“I don’t think you can generalize and say that $50 oil would signal a strong recovery,” he said in a recent interview. “There are many areas that are not as strong in economics.”

Wood Mackenzie is forecasting that oil prices will average $55 a barrel in 2017, as long as demand for oil holds up and U.S. production doesn’t kick back in. The Scottish energy consultancy said oil companies have cut around $1 trillion of capital investment in new oil and gas projects from the shale fields of Texas to oil deposits in the North Sea from 2015 to 2020.

For the largest companies, the uptick to $50 a barrel doesn’t help much in their quest to maintain their dividend payouts to investors this year.

The giant businesses don’t offer investors compelling growth prospects as they struggle to replace the millions of barrels they pump each year, making fat dividends an important selling point for investors. For many retirees who buy stocks directly or through pension funds, the regular payouts are a key source of income.

In June, when oil prices were around $50 a barrel, Royal Dutch Shell PLC announced new spending cuts to keep up its dividend payments, adhering to what Chief Executive Ben van Beurden called a “lower forever mind-set.” Shell is planning around prices in the low $40s this year, rising to $50 in 2017 and the mid-$60s in 2018.

The factors driving the market rally include the shrinking of a massive oil and gasoline glut. Last week, the International Energy Agency said crude-oil production would fall behind consumption for the first time in years.

On Wednesday the U.S. Energy Information Administration said U.S. crude inventories contracted by 2.7 million barrels last week while gasoline stocks fell by 2.2 million barrels.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia, the world’s top crude-oil exporter, has signaled in recent days that it was willing to cooperate with other big producers inside and outside of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, a 14-nation cartel the kingdom is part of.

Energy companies have expressed more optimism about 2017.

The volatile recovery ties in with the view that many big oil companies have touted over the last few months: that the massive oversupply that sent prices crashing would fade in the second half of the year, allowing the market to tighten as storage tanks are gradually drained.

How fast that ultimately happens is crucial for big oil companies. BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley, who coined the phrase “lower for longer” about oil prices, said last month he is no longer “as pessimistic as some.”

Earlier this week, Robin Watson, CEO of oil-services company Wood Group PLC, said the end of low oil prices could be in sight.

“It certainly feels like we’re around the bottom,” he said in an interview.

ZÚRICH (Reuters) - Un panel de seguridad nacional estadounidense aprobó la compra en 43.000 millones de dólares del grupo suizo de pesticidas y semillas Syngenta por parte de ChemChina, dijeron ambas compañías, lo que aumenta las posibilidades de que la mayor adquisición extranjera de una firma china concluya con éxito.

Las acciones de Syngenta trepaban un 11 por ciento en las primeras operaciones del lunes a 422,60 francos suizos, (438,75 dólares), mientras que la oferta de ChemChina valoraba a la compañía en unos 448 francos a tipos de cambio actuales, más un dividendo especial de cinco francos.

El analista de Kepler Cheuvreux, Christian Faitz, dijo que este era un "hito importante para la operación", y añadió en una nota para clientes que "la aprobación elimina grandes obstáculos potenciales y debería suponer un alivio para los accionistas de Syngenta".

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - La apreciación que han tenido las monedas de Latinoamérica en 2016 parece haber llegado a su límite y esta semana podrían deslizarse a la baja en línea con los leves descensos recientes del real brasileño, atentas al encuentro anual de inversores en la localidad estadounidense de Jackson Hole.

* En México, el peso operaría dentro del rango de 17,9 a 18,4 por dólar. Los cambistas mirarán los datos locales de la inflación de la primera quincena de agosto, la cifra definitiva del PIB correspondiente al segundo trimestre y las minutas de la última reunión de política monetaria del banco central.

* En Brasil, el real podría retomar las caídas de la semana pasada. El mercado se volcó a estrategias más defensivas ya que se tornó más cauto acerca de las perspectivas fiscales del país, ante ciertas dificultades del gobierno del presidente interino Michel Temer para aprobar medidas de ajuste.

* Una percepción de mayor aprensión se observa en las plazas de Chile y Perú. En Santiago, un operador dijo que el peso debería fluctuar algo volátil entre 653 y 663 por dólar, mientras que en Lima se anticipa un rango de 3,31 a 3,335 soles.

* También en Argentina surgió un panorama algo más débil para el peso ante la continuación de los recortes de tasas del Banco Central, al tiempo que termina la temporada de mayores liquidaciones de divisas de los agroexportadores. El peso tendría a las 15 unidades como punto de referencia.

* Para el viernes se espera una presentación que hará en Jackson Hole la presidenta de la Reserva Federal estadounidense, Janet Yellen. El domingo, el vicepresidente de la Fed, Stanley Fischer, dijo que el banco central estaba cerca de alcanzar sus objetivos de empleo e inflación, lo que podría alentar al dólar.

(Reuters) - La farmacéutica Pfizer Inc dijo que comprará el fabricante estadounidense de medicamentos contra el cáncer Medivation Inc en una operación valorada en alrededor de 14.000 millones de dólares, con el propósito de aumentar su cartera de oncología.

Pfizer ofrecerá a los accionistas de Medivation 81,50 por dólar por papel en efectivo, una prima sustancial con respecto a una primera oferta de 52,50 dólares realizada en abril por Sanofi SA.

Las acciones de Medivation, conocido por su fármaco para el cáncer de próstata Xtandi, subían un 19 por ciento, a 80,01 dólares, en las operaciones previas a la apertura de Wall Street, apenas por debajo del precio de oferta.

Sanofi elevó más tarde su oferta a 58 dólares por acción en efectivo y tres dólares por acción mediante una cláusula conocida como derecho al valor contingente, relacionada con el comportamiento de las ventas de Talazoparib, un medicamento contra el cáncer de mama que está en fase de desarrollo.
