Markets set to open lower on final trading day in October
Stocks slipped Monday as the final trading day of October kicked off, but the major averages were poised to snap a two-month losing streak.

The S&P 500 last traded 0.4% lower, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 1.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 50 points, or 0.15%.

Markets made a huge comeback in October. The Dow guided those gains and was last up 14.2% for the month. The 30-stock index is on pace for its best month since 1976 as investors bet on more traditional companies, like banks, to lead the next bull. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are also up about 8% and 4%, respectively, for October.

“Stocks are taking a breather after the big run last week,” said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at the Carson Group. “Then, considering the always important Fed meeting and interest rate decision on Wednesday, a pause makes even more sense. ”

October’s gains have come despite a mixed third-quarter earnings season, which has shown slowing growth and a few major disappointments from large tech companies such as Meta Platforms and Amazon. Those names led Monday’s tech losses as investors drifted out of the growth sector.

Traders are preparing this week for the latest Federal Reserve meeting beginning Tuesday. The central bank is expected to hike interest rates by 75 basis points on Wednesday. Many on Wall Street are looking for a signal from the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement or Chairman Jerome Powell’s press conference that the Fed could pause its hikes or reduce their size in the near future.

Wednesday’s impending rate hike and economic data due later this week, such as October’s nonfarm payrolls on Friday, could threaten the recent market rally.

“We primarily attribute the S&P 500′s sharp +9% rebound over the past 10 trading days to seemingly never-ending hopes for a ‘Fed pivot,’ which [the] market is apparently defining as a +75bps hike this week followed by a +50bps move in December,” said Wolfe Research’s Chris Senyek in a note to clients Monday. “Our sense is that investors are more likely than not to be disappointed on Wednesday afternoon.”

Earnings season continues this week with reports from Uber, Pfizer and Advanced Micro Devices.

Five stocks hit new lows, energy stocks notch fresh highs

Five stocks notched fresh lows during Monday’s trading session while a slew of energy names traded near all-time highs.

Shares of Meta Platforms traded near lows not seen since January 2016. The stock has tumbled more than 30% this month on the back of a disappointing quarterly report.

These stocks also hit new lows:

SVB Financial Group trading at lows not seen since September 2020
Bio-Rad Laboratories trading at lows not seen since April 2020
Catalent trading at lows not seen since April 2020
DaVita Inc. trading at lows not seen since April 2020
Some energy stocks, meanwhile, hit new highs. That included shares of Chevron, which trades at all-time highs dating back to its merger with Texaco in 2000. ConocoPhillips was last trading at levels not seen since its merger between Conoco and Phillips Petroleum in 2002.
