On Tap Next Week: Another Heavy Slate Of Earnings
By Kathy Shwiff
The “peak weeks” of first-quarter reports continue next week, with one-fifth of the Dow Jones Industrial Average components and nearly a third of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index members posting results.
Sure to be a highlight of the week, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and executive Fabrice Tourre are scheduled to testify before a Senate committee looking into Securities and Exchange Commission allegations. There’s also a Fed meeting on tap.
And debate on legislation to overhaul the nation’s financial system could begin Monday in the Senate.
Consumer-products giant Procter & Gamble Co. (PG); oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips; and defense contractors General Dynamics Corp. (GD) and Northrop Grumman Co. are among the largest companies reporting quarterly results next week. Both defense contractors and ConocoPhillips report Wednesday; Exxom Mobil and P&G come Thursday and Chevron is due next Friday.
Others scheduled to detail their results are European oil giants BP PLC on Tuesday and Royal Dutch Shell PLC a day later; refiners Valero Energy Corp., Sunoco Inc. and Tesoro Corp. (TSO), from Tuesday through Thursday, respectively; and chemical companies DuPont Co. (DD) on Tuesday and Dow Chemical Co. (DOW) on Wednesday.
Goldman CEO, Exec Named In SEC Suit To Testify: Goldman Sachs leader Lloyd Blankfein and executive Fabrice Tourre, who was accused of putting together a mortgage-backed product that lost virtually all of its value, are scheduled to testify Tuesday at a hearing focusing on the investment bank and the SEC’s suit alleging Goldman and Tourre defrauded investors by failing to disclose that hedge fund operator Paulson & Co. helped create a mortgage-backed product. The SEC said Tourre was principally responsible for crafting the deal with Paulson and an intermediary firm ACA Management LLC. The hearing will be the last in a series held by the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on the financial crisis.
Test Vote Monday On Financial-Overhaul Bill: Legislation that would overhaul the nation’s financial regulations faces a test vote Monday in the Senate after lawmakers have spent months haggling over a number of high-profile provisions. The procedural maneuver to initiate formal consideration of the measure requires the support of one Republican senator as well as all the Democrats. The bill would create a council of regulators charged with monitoring systemic risks to the economy, place a new bureau of consumer financial protection within the Federal Reserve, and grant new power for the government to seize and break up companies whose failure might pose a systemic risk to the economy.
No Change In Interest Rate Expected At Meeting: The Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee is not likely to make any changes in a key interest rate when it meets Tuesday and Wednesday, but observers will be looking closely at statements by Fed officials for any signs about when the central bank’s highly accommodative monetary policy stance may be reversed. The Federal Open Market Committee has pledged to keep the federal funds rate between zero and 0.25% for an “extended period.”
1Q GDP Estimated At 3.5%, Below 4Q Growth: Economists expect a government report on first-quarter gross domestic product, out next Friday, to show the economy grew 3.5%, compared with the fourth quarter’s 5.6%. On the same day, the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for April is expected to be raised to 71.8 from an initial reading of 69.5 two weeks ago that was the lowest level since November. Other economic reports due next week are the February S&P/Cash-Shiller Home Price Index, which looks at housing prices in 20 major metropolitan areas, and the nonprofit Conference Board’s consumer confidence index for April. Both are expected Tuesday. Reports on regional economic activity will be issued Monday by the Dallas Fed, Tuesday by the Richmond and Chicago Feds, and Thursday by the Kansas City Fed.

The next-generation BlackBerry Bold and/or Pearl could be unveiled as well as details on the latest operating system, BlackBerry OS 6.0.
