Líderes chinos inician reunión anual para definir plan económico: Xinhua

PEKÍN (Reuters) - Las máximas autoridades de China iniciaron una reunión anual para delinear el plan económico y de reformas para 2018, reportó el lunes la agencia oficial de noticias Xinhua.

La Conferencia Central de Trabajo Económico, que se desarrolla a puertas cerradas, es seguida de cerca por inversionistas en busca de pistas sobre políticas económicas prioritarias y objetivos clave para el próximo año.

La reunión se enfocará en la implementación de las agendas diseñadas tras el Congreso del Partido Comunista que se celebró en octubre, dijo Xinhua, sin ofrecer más detalles.

En una reunión del Politburó a inicios de este mes, altos funcionarios se comprometieron a profundizar las reformas estructurales y reducir riesgos, mientras intentan mantener un crecimiento económico constante en 2018.

Es probable que la reunión de alto nivel fije los objetivos económicos centrales para 2018, pero no se espera que éstos sean anunciados antes de la reunión parlamentaria anual en marzo.

Fuentes del área de política económica dijeron a Reuters que los líderes chinos probablemente mantendrán el objetivo de un crecimiento de “alrededor de 6,5 por ciento” en 2018, aún cuando aumentan los esfuerzos para controlar los riesgos sistémicos de una rápida acumulación de deuda en la segunda mayor economía del mundo.

Xinhua dijo que la reunión se inició el lunes pero no informó cuándo terminará. Fuentes señalaron que el encuentro probablemente concluiría el miércoles.

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - El presidente electo de Chile, Sebastián Piñera, dijo el lunes que trabajará para formar un gabinete amplio para su futuro gobierno, que incluya ideas de continuidad de las políticas de su antecesora de centroizquierda como también de cambio.

El multimillonario conservador, que logró una contundente victoria sobre el candidato del oficialismo en el balotaje presidencial de la víspera, se reunió temprano con la mandataria socialista Michelle Bachelet para iniciar la coordinación del cambio de mando en marzo. [nL1N1OI0R0]

“Ahora vamos a trabajar para conformar un gran equipo (...) queremos que sea un equipo amplio, pluralista. Tienen que ser una combinación, un complemento entre la experiencia y la renovación”, dijo Piñera a periodistas sobre su gabinete.

Además, confirmó que dialogó con Bachelet sobre un proyecto de nueva Constitución que la socialista se comprometió a enviar próximamente al Congreso.

“Estamos de acuerdo en perfeccionarla pero en un clima de unidad (...) La Constitución debe ser un gran marco de estabilidad y no de incertidumbre”, afirmó.

Confidence among the nation's homebuilders jumped unexpectedly in December on expectations of a stronger economy. A monthly reading of homebuilder sentiment rose five points to 74. This is the highest reading since 1999.
Fifty is the line between positive and negative sentiment on the National Association of Home Builders' index. November's reading was revised lower by one point.
Sentiment stood at 69 in December of 2016.

"Housing market conditions are improving partially because of new policies aimed at providing regulatory relief to the business community," said NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald, a home builder and developer from Kerrville, Texas.
Homebuilders had been vehemently opposed to the Republican tax plan, which is set for a final vote in Congress this week. Changes to both the mortgage interest deduction and property tax deductions were seen as removing some of the benefits of home ownership. Apparently, builders now see the business incentives in the plan as outweighing those other negatives.
Of the index's three components, buyer traffic jumped eight points to 58. Current sales conditions rose four points to 81. Sales expectations in the next six months increased three points to 79.

Buyer traffic is likely increasing so much because of the severe shortage of existing homes for sale. Realtors are reporting the lowest supply on record and are not expecting the situation to improve anytime soon. While housing starts did rise steadily throughout 2017, they did so very moderately and are still not close to historically normal levels of production.
"With low unemployment rates, favorable demographics and a tight supply of existing home inventory, we can expect continued upward movement of the single-family construction sector next year," said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz.
Regionally, on a three-month moving averages, builder sentiment in the Midwest increased six points to 69, in the South it rose three points to 72. In the West sentiment increased two points to 79 and in the Northeast it rose one point to 54.

Tax bill driving market momentum
U.S. stocks traded higher on Monday as investors eagerly awaited a vote on a bill that would cut corporate taxes. A slew of corporate deals also helped lift sentiment.
The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 184 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.7 percent, with materials and telecommunications as the best-performing sectors. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.9 percent and hit 7,000 for the first time.
