Markets at midday: S&P 500 struggles to reach record high

The S&P 500 hovered around the flatline in midday trading as it struggled to continue its run toward the February all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 51 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed, rising 0.8% as shares of major tech companies rose broadly. —Fred Imbert

Apple to join the 40-year club with latest debt offering

Apple is joining the growing list of companies offering investors a 40-year bond.

The company plans to issue a four-part debt deal, including 5-year, 10-year, 30-year and 40-year securities. Apple last issued debt in May in an $8.5 billion offering.

With super low interest rates and a wide-open debt market, companies have issued record amounts of debt this year. The market for corporate deals has been turbocharged since the Fed announced plans to buy corporate bonds and ETFs in March.

Other companies with 40-year bonds include Boeing, S&P Global, Alphabet, Amazon, Coca-Cola, Pepsico and Walt Disney, according to Credit Flow Research. Early talk is that Apple is seeking to offer about $5 billion in total, but that could increase. So far, the 40-year is expected to price at a spread of 135 basis points over the 30-year Treasury yield, but traders expect that to come in even narrower once it prices.

Apple is joining a small but expanding club of companies looking to stretch out the duration of their debt at very low rates. “There are only certain companies the market will allow to do 40 years,” said Andy Brenner of National Alliance. - Patti Domm

Apple is preparing to launch new subscription plans that bundle several of its services together, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.
According to the report, Apple plans to package services such as Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple News+, Apple Arcade and iCloud storage into different plans that provide consumers a discount for packaging everything together.
Some of Apple’s services have reportedly been off to a slow start, such as Apple News+. If it’s packaged with a more popular service, say Apple Music, people may be more willing to use it.

Apple is preparing to launch new subscription plans that bundle several of its services together, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The plans are reportedly called “Apple One” by employees, but it’s unclear if that’s going to be the final name.

According to the report, Apple plans to package services such as Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple News+, Apple Arcade and iCloud storage into different plans that provide consumers a discount for packaging everything together. Those services typically cost between $4.99 and $9.99 per month. The report said Apple is preparing several different tiers, including one that offers everything and others that bundle some services but not others. One may also offer a new workout class subscription, according to the report.


An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

Apple’s services business is surging. The segment delivered $13.16 billion in revenue during Apple’s fiscal third quarter, showing double-digit growth. Some of Apple’s services have reportedly been off to a slow start, however, such as Apple News+, which gives you access to several publications for $9.99 per month. If it’s packaged with a more popular service, say Apple Music, people may be more willing to use it.

It’s sort of like Amazon’s Prime service. If you sign up for Amazon Prime, you get access to faster shipping, Amazon Prime Video services, Amazon Photos, Amazon Prime Music, discounts at Whole Foods and so on. A bundled plan creates a better chance for Apple to lock customers into its services.

Apple is planning to unveil the services as soon as October, when it’s expected to announce new iPhones, according to the report.

Empty apartments in Manhattan reach record high, topping 13,000

The number of apartments for rent, or listing inventory, more than doubled over last year and set a record for the 14 years since data started being collected, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel.
While hundreds of thousands of residents left the city in March and April in the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, brokers and landlords hoped many would start returning in July and August.
July’s weakness, and what brokers say is already a slow August, suggests that Manhattan’s real estate and economic troubles could extend well into the fall or beyond.
