Facebook Adds Skype Video Chats
By IAN SHERR
Facebook Inc. said it is integrating Skype video chat into its social network, a move that mirrors a similar function rolled out by competitor Google Inc. last week as part of its new social service.
The new feature, which will come as part of a revamp of the company's website chatting feature, will use technology from Skype, a pioneer in Web-based video chatting.
Facebook on Wednesday introduced video chatting features to its platform, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg touted the social networking site's growing user base and increasing amount of data being shared. Stacey Delo reports live from the event.
."We're using the best technology out there for video chat with the best social technology," Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said during an event at the company's headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif.
Mr. Zuckerberg also disclosed that Facebook's social network now has reached 750 million users.
The new video chat feature comes as Facebook sees growing competition ahead of an expected initial public next year. Last week, search giant Google unveiled a new social networking service called Google+ that has been praised for its uncluttered design and ease of use. One of Google Plus's features is a group video chat function called "Hangouts."
