SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Crude-oil futures lost further ground on Thursday, trading below $90 a barrel as the dollar rose and as concerns about the U.S. economy and Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis simmered, casting a pall on prospects for oil consumption.

Crude for September delivery CL1U -4.53% declined $2.03, or 2.2%, to $89.86 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, its fifth down session.

Oil settled at a five-week low on Wednesday. A settlement below $90 on Thursday would be oil’s lowest since February.

GM profit revs up in second quarter
General Motors saw its profit double in the second quarter thanks to strong performances overseas.

“Market participants are increasingly becoming uneasy about debt worries in the U.S. and the (euro zone), where Spain and Italy shifted further into a poor light,” analysts at JBC Energy said in a note to clients.

In the previous session, a weekly inventories report showed an increase for crude supplies, contributing to the bearish sentiment.

Natural-gas futures had to come to terms with their own inventories report earlier Thursday. Futures dropped nearly 4% after the report showed a supply increase above what analysts had expected.

Natural gas NG11U -3.62% for September delivery was more recently down 12 cents, or 3.1%, to trade at $3.96 per million British thermal units.

Analysts had expected an increase between 32 billion cubic feet and 41 billion cubic feet for the week ended July 29, according to analyst reports.
