Shares of South Korean electronics parts suppliers to Apple, including display maker LG Display, chip maker Hynix, camera module supplier LG Innotek and battery maker Samsung SDI, are all up after Apple unveiled its latest iPad device in the U.S.
But Samsung Electronics, which supplies chips to Apple but competes with the U.S. firm in the mobile device league, is off 0.2% at 1,171,000 won as the new iPad model is expected to retake some of the tablet market share lost to the Android campaign in 4Q11.
“Apple’s share of global media tablet shipments for the full year 2012 is projected to amount to 61%, up from 57% in the 4Q of 2011,” IHS iSuppli says. It adds, aided by expected soaring sales of its new iPad, Apple in 2012 is projected to nearly double its spending on displays used in iPhones and iPads to around $9.0 billion, from $4.7 billion in 2011.
LG Display is up 2.4% at 28,250 won, Hynix is up 1.4% at 29,500 won, LG Innotek is up 5.5% at 99,200 won and Samsung SDI is up 2.6% at 139,500 won.
Shares of Taiwanese components suppliers are mixed as some saw profit-taking after their recent rallies ahead of the launch of the new iPad. Assembly company Hon Hai is up 1.2% at 100 New Taiwan dollars and lens maker Genius Electronic is up 2.9% at NT$338.50. But touch screen maker TPK is down 1.4% at NT$476.50, battery supplier Dynapack is down 2.7% at NT$165.50 on profit-taking as the good news has been priced in, analysts say. “iPad component makers may also fall on the price cut of the iPad 2 as Apple will also lower the pricing of components,” says a foreign bank trader.
