China to Contribute to Europe Rescue Efforts

NEW DELHI -- China is keen to contribute to a fund to bail out the euro zone, its trade minister said Wednesday, underscoring the Asian powerhouse's growing interest in playing a bigger role in the global economy as its financial strength grows.

"China will make due contributions" to rescue the European economy, Chen Deming said at a conference of trade ministers from the BRICS group of emerging nations--Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Europe requires a bailout package of $1 trillion, for which the international community needs to pitch in with $500 billion.

Russia, China and Brazil have voiced their willingness to contribute to the rescue package, while India--struggling to limit its yawning fiscal deficit--hasn't committed to any contribution.

Mr. Chen said an uncertain economic environment due to the euro zone crisis as well as rising crude oil prices are hurting global growth.

Growing tensions between the West and Iran over Tehran's alleged nuclear weapons program are adding to supply shocks, driving the price of crude oil higher and increasing the risks to the global economy.

While some Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea have cut oil imports from Iran in recent months following sanctions imposed by the U.S. and the European Union on Tehran, China has shown no sign of reducing purchases.

China's stance has disappointed Washington and especially the EU, which is in the process of ramping up an oil embargo on Iran that will take full effect on July 1.

"Iran has been and remains an important source of energy," Mr. Chen said.

Mr. Chen said though China will respect United Nations' resolutions on Iran, it will continue to nurture its own trade ties with it.

On the Chinese economy, Mr. Chen said its growth this year could be slightly higher than the current forecast of 7.5%.

China, often viewed as the main engine for reviving global growth, is showing signs of fatigue, and the country recently cut its economic growth forecast to 7.5% from 8.0%.

Demand from the U.S., a key trading partner, has been weak, mirroring muted demand from other developed Western nations for Asian merchandise.

China will aim to reduce its dependence on exports to cushion its economy from the global slowdown and focus on stimulating local demand, Mr. Chen added.
